Nottinghamshire’s Wolds Wine Estate released their first wine vintage this summer and it is already gaining attention. Their Solay, a blend of Solaris and Chardonnay grapes, is a sparkling white which is highlighted by food and drink specialist Nicky Rampley-Clarke in The Standard as “One of the best English Wines to Drink in 2024”. The “cracking fizz” from Rushcliffe is holding its own alongside wines from well known English wine producers such as Nyetimber and Ridgeview and helps promote Nottingham’s growing wine industry.
Being acknowledged at this level confirms that the efforts put in by the family to nurture their vines, increase biodiversity and promote low intervention natural winemaking is paying dividends. The recognition for their wine comes on the back of picking up a Silver and Bronze award for their first ciders at the British Cider Championships held in May.
Estate owner and founder Rob Kalisiak says: “We are really honoured and over the moon that our first wine has been recognised as one of the best English wines this year. It is a huge achievement for us at such an early stage of our wine journey. Ultimately we just want to make natural wines that are delicious and fun to drink and I think we have really achieved that with our range of wines from our first harvest.”
This is a huge achievement for the artisan vineyard, winery and glamping site which has waited three years since planting the vines to take their first harvest. As well as the Solay they have produced a still pink called Pinky Pinots, a Chardonnay and a fizzy red called Little Reds. As part of their desire to push boundaries Wolds Wine Estate have also crafted a dry hopped red wine which merges the craft beer and natural wine worlds.
Wolds Wine Estate’s first wines are all available direct from the vineyard and can be sampled on their vineyard tours and tastings. A selection of their wines are also available from Delilah’s and Little Brickhouse in Nottingham City Centre with more stockists to be announced soon.
